A Gaston County Grand Jury on Monday indicted [name withheld] and her boyfriend [name withheld] in the death of her 2-year-old daughter Addison.
According to court documents, [name withheld], 32, was indicted for involuntary manslaughter, contributing to the delinquency of a minor and neglectful child abuse.
In addition to the same three charges, [name withheld], 33, was also indicted for babysitting as a sex offender and failure to change address as a sex offender.
The toddler died July 21 at Gaston Memorial Hospital. [name withheld], a convicted sex offender, was babysitting Addison when she became unresponsive. [name withheld], who was at worked, rushed to the Bessemer City motel where they'd been staying and dialed 911.
An autopsy revealed the toddler had a broken leg that had not been treated and that she died of a blood infection.
Capt. Jay Human with the Gaston County Police said the Department of Social Services had recently opened an investigation after the agency received several calls about the mother and her boyfriend.
Three family members told the Observer in two separate interviews last week that they called DSS officials more than six times this spring, pleading to remove the girl from her mother's care. They said Addison was in danger, living with drug users and a convicted sex offender.
Human said on Monday that police are still investigating whether Addison was sexually assaulted.
[name withheld] and [name withheld] remained in the Gaston County Jail on individual bonds in excess of $1 million.
