Charges allege Zunker inappropriately touched girl

CHASKA - Carver County Republican Party chairman Paul Zunker (Facebook, Twitter) has resigned over accusation of sexual assault involving an underage girl.

Zunker, 36 of Waconia, was charged Sept. 9 in Carver County with two counts of second-degree criminal sexual conduct involving a person under age 16.

According to the criminal complaint, Zunker inappropriately touched a girl both over and under her clothes on two separate occasions in the past year. The complaint says the victim told Zunker to “knock it off,” which he did before touching her again.

The alleged abuse was brought to the attention of the Carver County sheriff’s office and a child protection worker in August.

The Chaska Herald newspaper reports Zunker has resigned as chairman. The Carver County Republican Party will meet Thursday to choose a replacement.

Zunker’s Twitter profile says he is “a Christian, husband, Dad, small business owner, Conservative, MNGOP State Central Committee member and Chair of the Republican Party of Carver County.” A Facebook page linked from that profile has been deleted.

If found guilty, Zunker faces 7 1/2 years in prison under the normal sentencing guidelines.
