Thursday's scheduled hearing for the former St. Lucie firefighter charged with stealing a Melbourne man's amputated foot from the scene of a car accident was canceled because her lawyer waived arraignment and entered a written plea of not guilty.
Cindy Economou, 38, is accused of taking home Karl Lambert's lower left leg from the scene of a two-vehicle collision on Interstate 95 in Port St. Lucie in September. Rescue crews amputated the foot to free Lambert from the wreck.
Police said Economou put the limb in her freezer, presumably to use in cadaver dog training.
She is charged with one count of petit theft, a second-degree misdemeanor, punishable by up to 60 days in jail and a $500 fine.
Her attorney, Steve Ziskinder of Fort Pierce, declined to comment on the charges.
Court records show the case has been set for a jury trial at 9 a.m. March 30 before St. Lucie County Judge Philip Yacucci.
Lambert survived the crash, and said he is currently undergoing physical therapy at the Veteran's Administration Outpatient Clinic in Viera in preparation for a prosthesis.
